How to Open a CSE Account in Sri Lanka
A complete, step-by-step walkthrough for opening a CDS account on the Colombo Stock Exchange — from picking a stockbroker to placing your first trade on the CSE Mobile App.
What is a CSE (CDS) account?
To invest in shares listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) you need a Central Depository System (CDS) account. The CDS is the electronic register that holds your shares — similar to a bank account, but for stocks. You can only open one through a stockbroker firm licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka.
Documents you'll need
- National Identity Card (NIC) or valid passport
- Recent utility bill (within 3 months) for proof of address
- Recent bank statement (within 3 months)
- One passport-size photograph
- Tax Identification Number (TIN), if available
Step 1 — Choose a licensed stockbroker
The CSE has a list of licensed stockbroker firms. Compare them on brokerage fees, research coverage, account-opening process (online vs branch), and the quality of their trading platform. For beginners, pick a broker that offers strong onboarding support and an easy-to-use mobile app.
Step 2 — Fill the CDS account opening form
Your chosen broker will give you a CDS account opening form together with their own client agreement. Most brokers now accept fully digital onboarding — you upload your documents, complete e-KYC (video verification), and sign electronically. Processing typically takes 1–3 working days.
Step 3 — Fund your trading account
Once your CDS account is active, transfer funds to your broker's designated client account. There is no minimum investment to open a CDS account, but most beginners start with LKR 25,000–100,000 to build a meaningful first portfolio.
Step 4 — Install the CSE Mobile App
The official CSE Mobile App (iOS & Android) lets you track real-time prices, view your CDS portfolio, read corporate announcements, and follow market indices. Pair it with your broker's trading app to place orders. Log in with the CDS number your broker provides.
Step 5 — Place your first trade
Start small. Buy a single, well-understood blue-chip share and watch how orders, settlement (T+3), and dividends actually work in practice. Investing on the CSE rewards patience and process — not speed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Picking a broker only on lowest brokerage — service and research matter more early on.
- Buying tips from social media without understanding the company's fundamentals.
- Investing money you might need within the next 12 months.
- Skipping a written strategy — entry, exit, and position sizing.
